How the median works

We line up every plan with the same speed and contract length: 12 months, 24 months or no contract. The one in the middle is the median, or middle price. For 10Gbps on 24 months it’s $38.90 right now. M1 HomePac 10Gbps costs $26.90, so it shows Save $12.00/mth. Some deals are only for some people, like new homes. Others come bundled with a gadget. We still list and tag them. But we leave them out of the middle price so it stays fair.

How we score routers

Each router gets six scores from 0 to 10. Then we add them up with these weights. Speed is 25%. We look at its fastest wired port compared with 10Gbps, and its fastest Wi-Fi band. Coverage is 20%. That’s mesh, tri-band, 4×4 radios and multi-gig links between units. Wired is 15%, for multi-gig LAN ports. Features are 15%. Each of these adds 1.25: MLO, WPA3, QoS, parental controls, free VPN, USB, mesh and a smart-home hub. Reviews are 15%. We only count ratings from the last 12 months, turned into a score out of 10. Shop star ratings count half. Value is 10%. That’s what the router can do compared with its stated worth or Singapore shop price. If a spec is missing, we show “not stated”. We never guess. No scored review in the last 12 months? The router gets a middle 5 for reviews, and we say so. If a score has no data, like no price, we drop it. The other weights then grow to fill the gap. When you pick a use, like gaming, we change the weights to suit it.

How we pick

We only use what each plan page lists. We leave out gadget bundles and plans only some people can get. Budget first: lowest effective $/mth. Best value: the most router score for each dollar a month, or lowest total contract cost if you have your own router. Heavy users or gamers: only plans at the fastest speed listed and, unless you have your own router, with a router whose wired port can carry that speed. No own router: only plans that come with a router. We show one plan per brand, up to three.
